the real Borat ?!?!
With all the publicity around Borat right now comes a man claiming he was the impetus behind the character. In 1999 he created a website so he could find a mate. It did have some buzz in the internet community, with many from around the world falling in love with his charm, including Bill Gates. You can view the webpage below.

In the commentary track for the DVD of Da ALi G show (where the Borat character was first displayed by comic Sasha Baron Cohen) Cohen states it was based off a real person (a doctor) he met in southern Russia. The guy was supposedly hilarious despite not trying to be.
If you look on the map Turkey is near southern Russia, though Mahir's town of Izmir is pretty far away. (Check it out, it's a good geography lesson-if you scroll up a bit from Turkey you'll see Nina's home country of Bosnia across from Italy)
Not sure if the character was "stolen" from Mahir-maybe it's just a coincidence. Even if it was, it was only based off him. It's not like Mahir created a movie or a comedic sketch. Hell, it's like making a movie based off anyone. I could make a movie based off one of you but you can't do anything about it. Personally I think that this guy is just trying to make some money since Borat is raking it in. Let me know what you think.

so you don't sound like an idiot next time: you can sue if somebody makes a movie based off a person without their permission (or their estate's permission if the person is dead). that's why there are disclaimers on movies and tv shows that read: "The events and characters depicted in this pho. toplay are fictitious. Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental." it's to cover their butts.
i mean, if somebody can sue mcdonalds for making them fat, you can be sure that you can sue for somebody profitting off of your life
maybe i used the wrong words but there are movies that are loosely based off real people all the time. and they don't always have that person's permission either. they based jerry maguire off of a real agent and i'm sure he wasn't real pleased with his protrayal. kramer from seinfeld was based on a real person who was not at all happy about the character. i'm sure there are many more of these cases too. these two just came to mind.
well, maybe. but since i'm responding anyway, did you know you can earn a butt-load of money as a secret shopper? i'm for real! last month i took all the money i earned and wedged it up my crack. it was a perfect fit!
